Cuesta College Book of the Year

Cuesta College Book of the Year

In March and April, Cuesta College is hosting a series of book discussions, lectures and films (see attachment). This year’s program focuses on the experiences of Japanese-Americans interned during World War II in relocation camps like Manzanar and TuleLake. Internment provides a framework

for stories of loss, perseverance and resiliency along with efforts to recover and thrive after the war. Programs highlight the role that family, friends and farming played in sustaining the Japanese-American community in San Luis Obispo County. The series concludes with a lecture and reception with Julie Otsuka, author of this year’s book of the year, When the Emperor was Divine, a poignant novel that describes the travails of a Japanese-American family sent to one such internment camp.
