What it's like for some of our families in need.

To let you know what it is like for families at the shelter: Arrive by bus at the Maxine Lewis shelter on Orcutt Rd at 4:00 p.m. for a meal and showers, and to sign in for the night All children must be under direct control at all times or risk being written up or evicted from the shelter. With a large number of children, or in the case of a single parent, that is very difficult. From there, families are bussed to the church of the month where they are to spend the night.
It is against the rules to bring anything extra to the night shelter. Everyone is wakened at 6:00 a.m. and must be off the property by 7:00 a.m. If they don’t have a car, families must then take 2 buses to the Prado Day Center for breakfast and lunch. Older children have to get to school, and cannot be on school property until 8:15 a.m. One option is for the parents to stay on the bus with their children until they can be dropped off at school. Families then go to Prado Day Center on the bus. There is a separate play area there for families with little children.
The Prado center closes at 3:00 p.m. and families then takes buses to pick up the school children, then go to the Maxine shelter for dinner and showers.
After 30 days, there is a lottery system because the shelter is overcrowded. Numbers are drawn, and some families cannot stay the night. This means that a family would have to find a way to get to a motel if they were not lucky enough to be selected. This can only be avoided by signing up for case management.

Coats for Christmas Day

A Bit of History:
The Jewish Community began this tradition many years ago, the thought being that our Christian brothers and sisters were thoroughly engaged with their families on this traditionally family-oriented, gift-giving, feast-full day. It was an easy, natural, joyous gift on the part of our community to provide for those with the greatest need on Christmas Day, since this is not a day that is part of the Jewish tradition. A home-cooked turkey dinner, with all the fixings, was where it all began.

Thirteen years ago, Naomi Blakely and Sheri Eibschutz took over the responsibility for this event as co-chairs, and decided to increase the bounty, from a simple home-cooked meal to a dinner where our guests would leave with gifts, having enjoyed a bit of entertainment, as well. The Grange Hall served us adequately for 5 or 6 years, until their requirement for hall rental exceeded our budget, which was zero. The OddFellows stepped right up and offered the use of their hall, which is our current location, and one for which we are extremely grateful.

The meal is still home-cooked by various members of the community at large, in no way limited to any one religious persuasion. It is now augmented with bread from San Luis Sourdough, pies from Apple Farm and Marie Callender’s, egg nog from Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream Lab, and transportation is provided to the event from the homeless shelter courtesy of Ride-On’s van. The trash and recycles are picked up through the additional support of San Luis Garbage.

Once there, our guests are entertained by Billy Foppiano and his pick-up group of local, fabulous musicians. They are then treated to world class Irish dancing, by performers from the Claddagh School of Irish Dance.

They are then led outside, to a covered tent (through the kindness of Sierra Vista Hospital) to receive their gifts: a sleeping bag, a warm, heavy duty jacket, tee-shirts, hooded sweatshirts, underwear, and a personal kit of toiletries. We have also been able to gift them with rain ponchos and umbrellas, through the generosity of the community and by word of mouth. San Luis Camp n Pack has been our angel, giving us prices that make these gifts affordable.

The coats are surplus, when possible, and newly purchased when surplus is not available. They are heavy duty, mid-thigh length warm, ruck-sack like jackets. Last year, one of our guests was overcome with the delicious meal and generosity, and lay down, under the overhang behind the hall, to cuddle up in his jacket and sleeping bag, happier than he could remember being.

Several years back, Stephan Lamb, Cal Poly’s Associate Director of Student Life and Leadership, encouraged us to involve the younger generation in this endeavor. The AmeriCorps volunteers now assist us with organizing, making phone calls, and assisting with logistics, such as contacting businesses for donations and encouraging student involvement, in addition to whatever other tasks we think of, which they undertake happily and willingly.

We are blessed beyond measure to live in such a warm and giving community, and are filled with pride and gratitude to be a part of this very special event!

San Luis Obispo Soroptimists' Women's Opportunity Award

Project Summary
The San Luis Obispo club, part of Soroptimist International of the Americas, is dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world. San Luis Obispo Soroptimists participate in Soroptimist’s major service project, the Women’s Opportunity Awards. The program provides women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families with the financial resources to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education or additional skills and training. The award can be used for tuition, books, childcare, carfare or any other education-related expense. This program, which begins on the club level, was created in 1972 to help women improve their ability to provide for their families. Each year, more than $1 million is provided in cash grants to women in need. Since the program’s inception in 1972, approximately $15 million in Women’s Opportunity Awards has been disbursed to about 25,000 women throughout the countries served by Soroptimist International of the America’s.

Awards Levels
Club-level award amounts vary (Soroptimist International of San Luis Obispo presents allocates up to $3,000 to the Women’s Opportunity Award each year). Club-level recipients then become eligible for region-level awards granted in each of Soroptimist’s 28 regions. The first place region recipients then become candidates for one of three $10,000 finalist awards.

Applications
Applications are available from the Cuesta College Financial Aid Office, or by contacting Mary Sansone at (805) 550-9461. Completed applications are due December 15.

Funding
Soroptimist International of San Luis Obispo raises funds for the award from its members and from communit fundraising activity.

Soroptimist International of San Luis Obispo
Soroptimist International of San Luis Obispo is a volunteer organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world. SLO Communities Bridging Poverty

SLO Communities Bridging Poverty to Host Information Sessions

SAN LUIS OBISPO – SLO Communities Bridging Poverty is a group of individuals and non-profit agencies in San Luis Obispo county that have come together to provide a bridge from poverty to possibility for those currently living in poverty in San Luis Obispo county. The inspiration for our movement was a presentation titled “Poverty 101” in San Luis Obispo last February by Donna Beegle, Ph. D. At her presentation, Beegle was living proof that the cycle of poverty can be broken, and the group that resulted from her presentation is determined to break the cycle of poverty in San Luis Obispo county.

Beegle is the only member of her family who hasn’t been incarcerated. She comes from generational poverty, the daughter of migrant farm workers. At 25, she was a single mother of two children with no high school degree, no job, and no skills.

Yet by the time she was 35 years old, the woman who everyone thought would become just another statistic, found a way out. Within those ten years she received her GED, an associates of arts degree at a community college, a beachelors degree, a masters degree, and a doctorate in education. The members of SLO Communities Bridging Poverty believe that others can also achieve great things, given the opportunity and some help “navigating” the system.

Beegle’s success began when she visited a program in Portland, OR called Women in Transition. Rather than give Beegle a hand-out, the program offered her the information and opportunity that provided her with a sense of self-worth, and the belief that she, Donna, was not the cause of her poverty. She says that her “aha” moment came when she was recognized as having worth.

SLO Communities Bridging Poverty is holding their first Opportunity Conference in San Luis Obispo County on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at Cuesta College. Donna Beegle will be the keynote speaker at the conference. Local individuals and agencies are working together to provide many “aha” moments at the conference, and we need the support of other individuals and agencies throughout the county to help provide those moments.

Opportunity Conference 2011– The Bridge from Poverty to Possibility – needs your help. We want to encourage anyone in the community who feels that they can help provide “aha” moments through sponsorship of the conference, or by helping as a Navigator for a conference participant. Information about being a Navigator will be available at the conference, or you may call Jan Knutson at 805-781-1872 for more information. Please plan to attend one of the following information sessions to learn more about this compelling opportunity to help someone in our county break the cycle of poverty.

Information Sessions: (all sessions will be held from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm)
South County: Tuesday, August 31, Grover Beach Community Center,1230 Trouville Ave, Grover Beach
San Luis Obispo: Wednesday, Sept. 22, SLO City/County Library, 995 Palm St., SLO
North County: Tuesday, Oct. 5., Plymouth Congregational Church, 1301 Oak St., Paso Robles

For more information about SLO Communities Bridging Poverty, or Opportunity Conference 2011, please go to www.slocounty.ca.gov/poverty.htm or www.slopoverty.wordpress.com or call Jan Knutson at 805.781.1872.

Thanks from Family Care Network

We received this thoughtful note from Lauren Burleson, Community Affairs Coordinator for Family Care Network:

Thank you so much for your generous donation of school supplies. The plethora of items you collected really help those we serve get excited about going back to school and feeling prepared to do so...perhaps for the first time. Thank you for serving local foster and high-needs children and teens in such a creative way.

Mama Bear Project for Womenade

Thanks to the advocacy of Lois Crotser, the Mama Bear project this year will be blanket throws for Womenade clients! These throws, that will be ready in December, will be made of 12"x12" squares knitted together with a heart pattern or plain. They will make colorful, warm additions to our donations to referred children and adults.

This amazing group of knitters meets Fridays at 11:00 at Yarns at the Adobe, on Chorro Street across from the Mission. Anne Gough, owner of the yarn shop, generously donates her time, talents, and a yarn stash. Knitters donate yarns, as well. You are welcome to join them as a knitter or crocheter, or just stop by to visit and encourage while enjoying the Adobe's peaceful garden.

Thanks from SLO Child Development Center

Hi Ladies, I just wanted to share a story with you about how Womenade has affected our Center. We have asked for your help four times now for everything from glasses to tires and rent. Each time, you have been so generous to our families in need. When people come to us in crisis, and we think that Womenade may be able to help them, we tell our families that we have "fairy godmothers". When one of the mothers returned today with her thank you card for the glasses she purchased last week, she came up with a quizzical look and asked, "How do I give mail to my fairy godmothers?". I thought that was really special and indicative of the wonderful work you do. Thank you with all of our hearts!
