January 2006: Cell phone and fanny pack for diabetic 2nd grader; phone provides immediate contact with his mom for insulin injections. Now he can attend school again! Referral: Melissa Musgrave, family services resource coordinator, San Luis Coastal ($127.95)
January 2006: Twin bed for a 7-year-old daughter of a single mom; the family, which includes the girl’s handicapped twin, are moving into their first house. Referral: Cecilia, CDHP ($30)
January 2006: Crib, mattress and linens, changing table, port-a-crib, stroller, and car-seat for parents about to have a baby. The father works full-time for minimum wage. Referral: Cecilia, CDHP ($70)
March 2006: Gasoline for transportation to and from the UCLA hospital for a family and their hydrocephalic 5-month-old daughter. Dad, a field worker, hasn’t been able to work as much due to the long rainy season, and Mom had to leave her job in order to take care of this baby. Referral: Laurie Morgan, SAFE ($300)
March 2006: Business cards for a young homeless man starting a construction business. Referral: Corinna, Prado Day ($55.77)
March 2006: Gasoline for a family to visit Mom in prison. The younger of two siblings is having nightmares worrying about his mom’s safety. Referral: Julie Jones, Laguna ($150)
March 2006: Partial payment of a retainer for a three-year-old boy; the appliance will prevent the need for costly orthodontia when he gets older. Family is borrowing money to pay for the remainder of the bill. Referral: Cecelia, CDHP ($250)
April 2006: Rent for single working mom with 1st grade daughter attending Sinsheimer. Restraining order necessary against her former roommate, and Womenade support prevents her from going homeless before she can find another roommate or a cheaper place to live. April 2006: Water bill payment for a single mom with Lupus who can get no financial help from Department of Social Services. She has 2 kids who attend Bishop's Peak and must live with another family to afford rent. Referral: Melissa Musgrave, San Luis Coastal’s family services resource coordinator ($147)
April 2006: Partial rent for a family made homeless by a house fire. They are struggling financially as mom works part-time and dad, who is in construction, has not worked very much due to all of the rain. Referral: Karla Robles, SAFE ($400)
April 2006: Partial tuition for a 7th grade student with diabetes and pre-renal failure to attend an 8-day diabetic camp at Bearskin Meadows this summer. The parents are divorced and dealing with alcohol and other problems. Referral: Laurie Morgan, SAFE ($100)
April 2006: Partial payment for three braces for a young boy. This treatment will prevent future, costly braces. Father has been out of work temporarily due to rain; dentist has reduced his costs for this family. Referral: Cecelia, CDHP ($300)
May 2006: Mattress for a baby being adopted by his grandma; this step helped the adoption move forward. Delivered by Judy Riener. Referral: Karla Robles, SAFE ($106.18)
May 2006: Library fine payment for a homeless boy; the books were lost when the family car blew up in a fire. (The fire department is helping the family get another vehicle.) The sixth-grader will be restricted to only checking out 2 books at a time; he reads at the library rather than spending his time at Prado Day Center. May 2006: Electricity bill for an abused woman on worker’s compensation and suicide watch. She is leaving her abuser, but can’t get utilities turned on until past bills are paid. Referral: Patricia Gundert, Women’s Shelter ($51.05)
June 2006: Childcare for two children while their mom is hospitalized for a C-section. The mother had to leave the children’s father due to domestic violence; she has a restraining order against him. We also provided a changing table for the new baby boy. Referral: Patricia Gundert, Women’s Shelter ($228.26)

August 2006: Clothes and shoes for a 17-year-old mother (and her sister, age 16) to attend her 13-month-old daughter’s funeral. The family was in Atascadero’s shelter, but now has been given a room in North County’s Motel 6. The baby died in an automobile accident on Highway 46; the sisters were severely injured, as well. September 2006: Payment for an emergency book loan for a 35-year-old homeless woman with much potential who is in the process of finding a job and housing. Referral: Andrea Devitt, counselor, Cuesta College ($100)
September 2006: Soccer shoes for two homeless children, a Bishop’s Peak sister and her San Luis High brother. Referral: Andrea Blanco, Laguna Middle ($46)
September 2006: Partial payment for textbooks for a struggling Cuesta 4.0 student. Referral: Andrea Devitt, counselor, Cuesta College ($50)
September 2006: Partial rent for a homeless woman with children who has found acceptable housing; she and her children were forced to leave a harmful living situation taking only their clothes. She has only been able to find part-time employment. Referral: Mary Kopecky, Marylou Gooden ($200)
September 2006: Food for family staying in Los Angeles while their 2-year-old undergoes open heart surgery. Dad is self-employed and mom must stay home to care for two boys under 4 years of age. Referral: Elaine Stewart and Sonja Savery-Orton ($450 which includes Womenade member money donated especially for this family by Arlene Yost, Colleen Spafford, and Kathy Greer).
October 2006: Clothes for a family who have had to destroy all their soft goods. The mother has been hospitalized for several weeks with severe mold poisoning. They must find a new, healthy apartment. The father is in construction and they have two children, a 9-month-old boy, and a girl, age 7. Referral: Elaine Stewart and Heather Senecal ($200 which includes Womenade member money donated especially for this family from Linda Bishop and Judy Riener)

October 2006: A high school girl in the E.D. program and in foster care was asked to go to homecoming, but she has no money for a dress; her teacher shopped for one with her. Referral: Melissa Musgrave, Family Resources Counselor, San Luis Coastal ($58.32)
October 2006: Legal assistance for an abused young mother who has a restraining order against her husband. When she finally left and got the protective order, he filed for divorce, suing for custody of their daughter; she needs to file a response before November 3, so it doesn't go into default, and the judge denied her fee waiver. She has $5 in her account. Referral: Patricia Gundert, legal services, Women’s Shelter ($320)
November 2006: Shoes, socks and underwear for a special needs high school student living in a shelter. Referral: Melissa Musgrave and Teri Chapman, San Luis Coastal ($99.35)
November 2006: Payment for the removal of braces for a San Luis High girl. The family has NO money and two other children, one needing multiple heart operations. Braces were put on this teen three years ago; then, since no orthodontist in our county will accept Medi-Cal, the parents could not afford to take their daughter back for adjustments! Finally, in so much misery, she tried to remove the braces with pliers! She is in danger of losing her teeth if the current braces are not removed and proper ortho care administered. Referral: Cecelia, CDHP; special support from Julie Jones, Megan Healy, Judy Copeland, and Kathy Ahern, Laguna staff members ($500)
December 2006: Emergency dental treatment at Clinica de Tolosa for a third grade Pacheco girl. Referral: Lisa Wearda, Pacheco ($67.50)
December 2006: Clothing and groceries for a family of 5, with girls aged 3 and 7 and a teenage boy. Earlier this year, the husband suffered a permanently disabling brain aneurism and receives only $500 in disability payments monthly. Referral: Erin Schimke, Laguna; special support from Katherine and Steve Anderson ($350)
January 2007: Groceries for middle school and elementary children being raised by their grandma; we thought someone had taken care of this need for the holidays and it wasn’t done! Referral: Julie Jones, Laguna Middle ($150)
January 2007: Groceries for a middle school boy raising himself. His alcoholic mom let Medi-Cal lapse, and he has been collecting cans to get food money. Referral: Julie Jones, Laguna; Dave Platt, County social worker ($87.13)
January 2007: Crib/toddler bed, sheet, and clothes for a migrant family working the wine fields. Since the pregnant mom is no longer able to work in the fields, her 16-year-old MBHS daughter wanted to quit school and take her mom’s place, but Barb, migrant specialist, urged her to stay.
